Psychologist vs Psychiatrist: Who should you see?

One of the most common questions people ask before seeking help is: 'Should I see a psychologist or a psychiatrist?' The titles sound similar, and they often work together, but their training and approaches to treatment are fundamentally different.

What does a Psychologist do?

A clinical psychologist has an advanced degree (MPhil or PsyD in Clinical Psychology in India, regulated by the RCI) and is trained in psychological assessment and therapy.

Psychologists treat mental health conditions using 'talk therapy'—evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). They help you understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and teach practical coping skills. They do not prescribe medication.

What does a Psychiatrist do?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MBBS followed by MD or DPM in Psychiatry). Their primary approach is medical.

Because they are doctors, psychiatrists can prescribe medications (like antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication) to help manage the chemical and biological aspects of mental health conditions. Some psychiatrists also offer brief therapy, but their focus is typically on diagnosis and medication management.

Who should you see first?

If you want a space to talk, process emotions, or learn coping skills for anxiety, stress, or relationship issues, starting with a psychologist is often best.

If you are experiencing severe symptoms, psychosis, severe depression that makes it hard to function, or if you feel you might need medication to stabilize, consulting a psychiatrist is the right first step.

Very often, people see both: a psychiatrist to manage the medical side, and a psychologist for ongoing therapy.
